High Rake Lead Mine
A shaft sunk in 1768 failed due to flooding. In 1834 an ambitious project was started using the most advanced pumps and steam engines available at the time. By 1852 the mine was once again abandoned. The 700' main shaft remains flooded to a depth of 400'. In the 20s and 30s the mine was re-worked for fluorspar and stone from the mine buildings re-used locally for housing.
