Rigging

I have used the tried and tested route here. While I am fully capable of constructing my own rig I have chosen to buy in the Picavet suspension and make the actual camera harness.

As I keep stressing there’s too much going on here to re-invent the wheel. It may well be that in time I might come up with variations and possible improvements.

Attaching the camera to the rising kite line is relatively simple if you use hang-ups, again I’ve bought those in and they do work a treat.

A word on actually doing this while flying.

You must first stabilise the kite in flight before attaching the camera rig. This is especially true in an urban situation where buildings and trees may give false flying conditions. In such a situation I strongly advise the help of an assistant and do make a recce of the site and get any permissions BEFORE launching your kit & Kite skyward.

It took 3 visits to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct before I attached the rig to the kite. I flew on all 3 occasions but it was only on the last trip did I consider it safe to launch the camera. And I have to admit is was only just on lower lifting limits.
